Planet Pioneers at IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi

In the lead-up to the IUCN World Conservation Congress, I published an article in Entrepreneur Magazine featuring the entrepreneurs and leaders changing the way we protect nature: “Planet Pioneers: Nature‑Positive Entrepreneurs are Heading to Abu Dhabi’s IUCN World Conservation Congress.”

The article spotlights visionary businesses and initiatives – including Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, Ocean-Revive, NatureMetrics, Savimbo, EarthAcre, Blue Forest, Nabat, Kelp Blue, Clean Rivers, The Waste Lab, Palmade Biodegradable Products, Sway and others – who are using tech, finance, and creativity to restore ecosystems and transform industries for a nature-positive future.

A few things I explore:

  • How startups are innovating to restore ecosystems, reduce pollution, and enable conservation tech
  • The scaling potential of nature‑based business models, especially in the Middle East
  • What the upcoming IUCN Congress in Abu Dhabi might catalyze for partnerships and innovation

Strengthening Sustainable Tourism’s Role in Biodiversity Conservation and Community Resilience

Strengthening Sustainable Tourism’s Role in Biodiversity Conservation and Community Resilience

This IUCN paper follows the principles outlined in IUCN Resolution 130 and offers policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders a roadmap for transforming tourism into a powerful mechanism for safeguarding ecosystems. Through strategic planning and collaboration, tourism can protect biodiversity, drive sustainable economic development, and ensure a thriving planet for future generations.

I have contributed to this paper with a case study on a project I led with Roland Berger in partnership with Emirates Nature WWF and Natureza Urbana in the UAE for the conservation of a mangrove lagoon through ecotourism.

Ecosystem services valuation of a kelp forest in Namibia

|

This article presents a strategy framework that was developed to balance economic development along the Red Sea coast with nature conservation. The framework covers seven key dimensions to protect the unique marine biodiversity of the Red Sea:
1) health and value of biodiversity and ecosystem services,
2) marine spatial planning and protected areas,
3) enabling infrastructure,
4) sustainable financing schemes and mechanisms,
5) wareness and education programs,
6) national, regional, and global cooperation, and finally
7) monitoring and enforcement.

As part of a joint initiative with the Kelp Forest Foundation, a valuation case study was carried out on a 31-hectare kelp forest in Lüderitz , Namibia. By quantifying the local value of the forest’s ecosystem, we aimed to support more effective communication with stakeholders, inform decision-making and ultimately protect the kelp forest.

Our valuation honed in on the real ecological benefits of the kelp forest, such as carbon sequestration, coastal protection, and marine biodiversity, while aligning with its contribution to local conditions and stakeholder needs, including kelp harvesting.

Unveiling the Economic Value of Ecosystem Services in the UAE’s Coastal Lagoons: A Focus on Ecotourism

As part of a joint initiative with Emirates Nature-WWF, Roland Berger developed an economic model for the valuation of the ecosystem services provided by coastal lagoons in the UAE. This model points towards ecotourism as a promising scenario in which ecosystem services can increase over time, with both nature conservation and socio-development prospering and ultimately contributing towards a Sustainable Blue Economy. Click here for the full article published on the Roland Berger websiteClick here for the article published on the Emirates Nature-WWF website.
